Q:What’s a sick home?
A:
A sick home is one where the people living there, especially children, are feeling the effects of indoor air pollutants that have built up over a long period of time. Many of these effects are noticed as breathing problems. People who live in sick homes suffer from allergies and asthma and many have to take medicines to relieve their discomfort. Some asthma attacks are so serious that a child may have to be taken to a hospital. Others show milder effects such as a runny nose and itchy eyes. Sometimes the people in sick homes have trouble paying attention or are tired all the time. Indoor air pollutants that cause these effects include many kinds of particles in the air. Some particles are just dust while others come from household cleaners. Other particles may come from pets or mold.
