Q:

What does it mean to "live off the grid"?

I've seen the phrase "living off the grid" on the net, but I can't remember where. Does it have something to do with electricity? Can anyone do it? If it saves money, is it worth the effort to do it? How much electricity would a typical home really need and how would one produce it?

A:

Simply put, living off the grid means disconnecting your home from the power lines. Anyone can do it under the right circumstances. It is not easy to make the lifestyle changes that allow you to do away with dependence on the power company. However, seeking this kind of independence can enliven your life as well as provide a sense of accomplishment. People who examine their lives and see that they are spending a lot of time paying for their power find it worth the effort.
It is very difficult to say what a typical home would be. That's because much depends upon the size of your family and the climate where your home is located. You may produce your own power through solar arrays, wind power, or fuel cells.
