Q:

Short of skipping flushes, is there a way to not waste toilet water? I

And is it recirculated or am I wasting clean water every time I flush

A:

Yes, but what you may do depends on the age of your toilet. If you have an older model, it probably has a larger tank than recent, low-flow models. You can save by reducing the amount of water that flows into the tank when it refills after flushing. You can adjust the refill float so that less water is used when the talk is refilled. Also you can place a container of water in the tank to displace some of the refill water. Try using a half-gallon milk container weighted with pebbles. Place it away from the working parts of the flushing system.

You may replace these older toilets with low flow ones. Some of these have one button for liquid only and another for solids. Less water is used to flush away liquids. Alternatively, you could use composting toilets. However, while doing so really cuts your water use, you must make serious changes in your waste disposal systems.

Another way to use less water is to eliminate leaks. Check to make sure you have no leaks. See http://www.toiletology.com/conserve.shtml

Toilet water is not recirculated in your home. However, if your home is connected to a municipal sewer system, the water you flush gets treated and is returned to natural water bodies. Thus it is ultimately reused...at least by someone if not by you.
