Q:Nuclear Power There is big debate at the moment wether or not a nuclear power plant should be placed north of our city. What are your views on Nuclear Power? Me, I am very against it. People say it is clean when the waste it creates stays there for yaers. And mining for uranium is dangerous as well, isn't it?
A:
One of the biggest selling points for using nuclear power is that it is clean. That is, it does not pollute the air or water. Producing energy at nuclear power plants has been safe. France produces 80% of its energy that way and has had no significant accidents and despite the accident at Three-Mile Island, the US safety record is good.
On the other hand, there are serious problems with transporting and storing nuclear waste. Neither is really safe. Some question the security of the older nuclear plants and their cooling water supply systems.
My view is that when the serious issues have been adequately addressed, then nuclear power may contribute to the strategies needed to reduce the effects of global warming.
You're right. There are problems with the mining of the uranium needed for nuclear reactors. Radon, a gas that is harmful to humans, is released. However, this aspect of the safety issue is less important than the ones mentioned above.
Personally, I wouldn't choose to live near a nuclear power plant.
